I love mood boards, and have been making them since I was a teen.
Mood Boards help you define a concept for your Projects
Start early in your project, to help you refine your ideas and not waste time by getting overwhelmed with too many ideas. This is also why I like to do a board by hand, Pinterest is great, but you can go crazy with soooo many ideas.
Design/Mood Board How I do It
Idea -what the board is going to be used for- room design, fashion clothing ideas, sewing and art plans, garden planning, event ideas and planning.
Sizing and saving-you can make any size you want, mostly it will depend on the size of the project and how you want to use it.
The boards are usually used just for the duration of the project you are planning, you might like to hang it up for a while, so you will need to use a backing structure strong enough to support a hanger, or that can lean against the wall. You can also take a photo of the finished mood board to save it as well.
Materials-collect all kinds of things that fit in the style of the idea. Color samples from papers and magazine tear outs, print out images from the internet, Fabric swatches, ribbons, yarns, bits and pieces of ephemera, just gather as many things as you can. You probably won’t use all of the items but it’s always good to have extra.
-Backing Board-a piece of cardstock, old cardboard, painting canvas or something that has a stiff structure to hold all your idea materials.
- some markers, paints, colored pencils can be helpful
Collect all supplies and sort your favorites images and materials. Lay everything out and see how it goes together, move things around and cut them up. The mood board will evolve as you work through your selections.
Glue it all down so you can have it if you need to take it to the store for shopping.
Hope this gives you all a good idea starting point for creating mood/design boards for your next project.
This is the board I used to design my new collection of art and shirts. I will be launching my next shop update Friday July 15 please check it out. Also, sign up for my newsletter to keep up with new projects and ideas for living a creative nature inspired life.
