Late Summer Garden Tips
We have been working on our kitchen remodel for most of August, so the gardens have been a little neglected. The Euphorbia (spurges) are looking good and the ferns, since we had a lot of rain earlier. The lavender does not like so much water so a couple of plants are totally lost and I will pull out the others and put them in pots to be nursed back to health for next year.
That is one of my tips-if your soil is not so good just take out some plants and put in pots so you can look after them easier in the fall/winter. This also lets up work on the soil in those beds by adding compost materials to improve it for next season.
Another tip-divide any bulbs or large perennials, we have a big clump of iris that will be moved and separated, and the ornamental grasses will need to split up as well. If you plant them in the new spots now it saves a lot of work in the spring.
Getting weeds out and adding a little extra mulch is good now. We live in the south so we have a longer warm season so it is still hot to work outside, and the mosquitoes are so bad right now, but I try to do just a little every day.
Plenty to do in the garden right now, and still a lot to enjoy!
