Voting Dress
The election in the United States, is next week. It is so important. I made this piece of art to help me work through all that is happening in our country, to keep busy and avoid the “news.” It was inspired by Dorothy Day and her prison dress. It was signed by the 40 women who were arrested at the White House in 1917 for protesting their exclusion to voting. It wasn’t until 1920 the nineteenth amendment was passed with the 36 states needed and not until 1984 did the final state, Mississippi ratified the right to vote for all women.
I have added the names to this art, of all the women family and friends, old and young that have given me help and hope in my life. These strong women are still fighting for this country and the future.
So as you can see it was not that long ago and that is why this election is so important. It takes only a few years and a few people in power, to take us back to the awful times of restricted rights for some, and even worse treatment of others.
